She was an English major back in her homeland of Taiwan. She immigrated here with nothing except dreams for me. Love you, Mama šŸ’›

(And yes, that’s me in a turtleneck. I wear clothes sometimes.)

Since receiving the Stonewall Honor in Literature, I’ve been plagued with guilt. How am I, with all my privilege as a cisgender man, worthy of the Stonewall legacy of trans bravery and revolution…while that history is currently being erased?

We all need a reminder that:

THE SEEDS OF LGBTQ+ LIBERATION WERE PLANTED BY TRANS WOMEN OF COLOR.
In 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn, it was trans women like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera who stood at the front lines, sparking the uprising that would become a cornerstone of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Their bravery paved the way for the freedoms many enjoy today.

BUT 55 YEARS LATER, THE FIGHT IS HARDER THAN EVER.
Today, trans people—especially Black and Brown trans women—are facing a devastating wave of legislative attacks, violence, and erasure. Over 500 anti-trans bills have been introduced across the U.S. in recent years, targeting healthcare, education, public spaces, and basic human dignity.

IF YOU’VE BENEFITED FROM LGBTQ+ RIGHTS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A CISGENDER GAY MAN, THANK THE TRANS COMMUNITY IN ACTION.
	•	Speak up when you see transphobia.
	•	Donate to grassroots trans-led organizations.
	•	Vote for policies and politicians that protect trans lives.
	•	Share stories that center trans voices—not just during Pride, but year-round.

In late 2019, I was arrested in Shanghai along with a group of friends at a hotel bar. I’d been living in China as an American expat for five years at that point, and it was the most terrifying experience of my life.

Worst yet was how targeted the police raid felt. We were celebrating our friend’s birthday with some beers, and we just so happened to all be gay men. The cops came and accused us of doing drugs, locked us in jail, and shaved our heads for hair samples.

Up til that point, I’d always felt welcome and accepted in China (my ancestral homeland) as a gay person. So this was a shocking escalation. It also marked the moment when I realized it was time to come home to Los Angeles.

A few months later, the pandemic happened, and by February 2020, I was home in LA, working on my first novel, inspired by my experiences as a gay man in Asia. THE EMPEROR AND THE ENDLESS PALACE was published three years later, and I’m a full-time novelist today.
